Caldwell Named President of the College of Menominee Nation 

 

Christopher Caldwell has been named President of the College of Menominee Nation (CMN) by the CMN Board of Trustees. The Board is led by Chairperson Gary Frechette, Vice-Chairperson Sara LaBarge, members; Shannon Chapman, Jesse Waukau, Michael Delabrue, Crystal Chapman-Chevalier and Marcus Denny. Caldwell assumes the position on June 25, 2021.

 

Caldwell has been serving as Interim President of the College since February 2020. Frechette noted his leadership after the transition from the Director of CMN’s Sustainable Development Institute (SDI) into the Interim President position stating, “Caldwell is a natural fit for the position, has led the institution through a very tough year and the Board is confident in his ability to continue to lead the College.”

 

As a part of the search process held by CMN’s Board of Trustees, the President-elect held a lecture titled, “Omāēqnomenēwak Māēc-kaehkīnūhamatiwikamek, Pursuing the Best Path for the Next Seven Generations.” In this lecture held on March 26, 2021, Caldwell spoke of the importance of sustainability and culture.  Upon accepting the position as President, Caldwell stated that he is “looking forward to serving the Menominee people and developing future leaders,” acknowledging his appreciation for the confidence the Board and staff have in him and the love and support of his family. Caldwell is the fourth person to lead CMN since its inception in 1993.

 

CMN is an accredited baccalaureate-level college with campuses in Keshena and Green Bay, Wisconsin. An alumnus of the College, Caldwell began his higher education journey at CMN earning his Associate’s degree in Sustainable Development. He holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Natural Resources from University of Wisconsin-Madison, a Master’s Degree in Environmental Science and Policy from UW-Green Bay, and is currently a PhD candidate in Environment and Resources from UW-Madison Nelson Institute.

 

An enrolled member of the Menominee Indian Tribe, Caldwell is familiar with the College and its mission and values being in the previous role as Director of SDI for eight years. Previous to working at the College, he held positions as Tribal Resources Director/Compliance, Enforcement Officer for the Menominee Indian Tribe, forest products technician with the USDA Forest Service’s Forest Products Laboratory in Madison, student and intern with the U.S. Department of Interior Bureau of Indian Affairs-NCCE, and timber marker/forestry technician with Menominee Tribal Enterprises.
